Crayola broke our hearts with their announcement today. On National Crayon Day, March 31, 2017, Crayola officially retired one of its iconic colors from the 24 pack. While we waited for the chosen color to be announced, our marketing team decided to weigh in and vote (unhappily) which color we thought would be selected.
#1 Vote: Apricot
#2 Vote: Yellow-Orange
#3 Vote: Scarlet
#4 Vote: None!
Some of us responded more passionately than others, but all of us on the team agree that it is sad to see a Crayola crayon and piece of our childhood retire. As one member of our team commented,
Nearly every child’s first experience with art is with Crayola crayons and Crayola crayons are a classic! A classic never goes out of style therefore, ALL colors must stay.
And the retired color is…
In all our research and debate, we learned a lot! Dandelion was introduced in 1990 and other colors in the past have retired from the 24 box to the other selections. Dandelion, however, will be the first to officially retire and will not be available in wider selections.
While we are sad to see Dandelion go, we are curious to see what color will replace it in the 24 box of crayons. Crayola announced during their Facebook live feed that they are hard at work creating a new color and shared two details:
- The new color will be part of the blue family.
- This summer, fans will get the chance to take part in naming the color.
We will stay tuned! What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
